Donald Trump’s deregulation policies could further enhance US exceptionalism, but there could be long-term inflationary pressures from trade tariffs.

Meanwhile, geopolitical factors, including US trade policies under President Trump and tensions with China, are set to heavily influence global investment strategies.

In this latest Schroders quarterly roundup for Talking Point, Simoney Kyriakou, editor, and Ima Jackson-Obot, deputy features editor at FT Adviser, look back over the past three months at what the big topics were and discuss the impact of events on investors and their financial advisers.

In October, FT Adviser looked at private markets.

Traditionally dominated by institutional investors, it is a market that is gaining attention due to regulatory changes which is enabling retail investor access.

Diversification, inflation protection and varied assets such as private equity, infrastructure and real estate make private markets appealing.

However, risks like liquidity challenges and valuation complexity persist, requiring investor expertise.

November was a very big month with the US elections.

US equities, backed by innovation and deregulation, continue to dominate portfolios – a trend that is expected continue under a Trump administration, although high valuations and potential trade tariffs raise concerns.

Meanwhile, Europe and the UK present undervalued opportunities amidst Brexit challenges and domestic economic pressures.

Elsewhere, Asia’s growth narrative is shifting, with India emerging as a tech and innovation hub, surpassing China in population dynamics.

With the end of the year approaching, we looked at the key themes for 2025, which include geopolitical uncertainties, energy transitions and evolving technology like AI, emphasising the importance of diversification in navigating volatile markets.

We also looked ahead at future Talking Point topics:  fixed income, UK mid-caps and ESG investing.
